This is a tool that combines Non-Violent Communication and Somatic (Body) Experiences with the original ‘Behaviour Chain Analysis Worksheet’ from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP.
Use this flow-chart to ‘unpack,’ understand, and ultimately interrupt the thoughts, feelings, needs, and physical sensations that lead to maladaptive responses, or addictive, compulsive, or impulsive behaviours. Often what leads us to these behaviours happens so quickly and overwhelmingly that, without stopping to understand them, we can have no hope of stopping them.

When we can begin to recognize what happens inside of us that leads to these behaviours, we can begin to interrupt the process before we find ourselves acting out maladaptively. Finally, by identifying the need that these behaviours are meeting, we can determine, authentically, a healthier way to meet that need.
The practice of Non-Violent Communication identifies and utilizes a set of universal human needs; so in this context and this worksheet, needs do not imply ‘neediness’ or emotional weakness. Rather, they are something that can connect us all with compassion, while also assisting us in having compassion for ourselves in our triggers.
Lastly, understand that this flow-chart may look simple; however, the process of identifying each part of a trigger can be complex. It will often evolve and clarify itself once you begin the process of trying to break it down. It’s something to refine and clarify as you go along.
